Health and accident insurance

Health insurance

Students are generally required by law to have health insurance for the entire duration of their studies. Criteria such as age, number of semesters, earnings or previous insurance are important for the choice of health insurance. Detailed information on the various options and aspects to consider can be found on the website of the consumer advice centre.

Electronic reporting procedure

The entire data exchange between h_da and the health insurance companies takes place electronically.

Sender number of the h_da: H0001014.

Proof of enrolment

For enrolment at h_da, proof of insurance must be submitted in electronic form. The entire data exchange between the university and the health insurance company takes place electronically in the following order:

  1. During the application period, inform your health insurance company that you require"reason for registration 10 for Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences" . If you are privately insured, you can apply for a corresponding confirmation from a statutory health insurance company.
  2. Your health insurance provider will send the electronic notification to h_da, which may take a few working days.
  3. After receiving the electronic notification, h_da will confirm your enrolment to your health insurance company using the "reason for notification M20", provided the other requirements are met.

The insurance card or a written membership certificate are not sufficient!

Proof during the study programme

Change of health insurance company

A change of health insurance provider/health insurance company must also be reported during your studies. To do this, you must immediately request a notification of your insurance status from the new health insurance company, which will send it electronically to h_da. The sender number of h_da for the electronic notification procedure is H0001014.

Further information on the subject of insurance can also be found on the Studierendenwerk website.

Delayed payment of health insurance contributions

If you are in arrears with your health insurance payments, your health insurance company is obliged to inform us. If such a notification is received by h_da, you will be blocked from re-registering for the next semester until the delay in payment has been clarified with the health insurance company and your insurance status has been reconfirmed. It is not possible to re-register without proof of valid health insurance; if the problem is not resolved, you may be exmatriculated ex officio.

End of the degree programme

After the end of your studies, h_da will send the "reason for registration M30" to the responsible health insurance company within a few weeks of exmatriculation.

Information for international applicants/students

Proof of insurance is required for the initial application and for the extension of the residence permit for the purpose of studying.

EU/EEA nationals

Students from the EU or EEA who are in possession of a European Health Insurance Card do not require additional health insurance in Germany. You can have your domestic insurance status recognised by a German statutory health insurance company of your choice. Further information can be found on the website of the German Student Union

Study programme/language course

If you are taking part in a preparatory language course or attending a preparatory college in Germany, you will not normally be able to take out statutory health insurance. In this case, private insurance must be chosen.

When applying for a residence permit, please contact your local immigration office to find out what form the proof should take.

Once the language course has been completed, students under the age of 30 can switch to statutory health insurance for their studies.

Accident insurance

Students at universities in Hessen are insured by Unfallkasse Hessen during their studies and on the associated routes and events. This is compensation for physical injury, but not for damage to property. All information on benefits and behaviour in the event of an accident can be found on the Unfallkasse Hessen website.

Reporting an accident

If you are unable to work or "unable to study" for more than three days following an accident in connection with your studies at h_da, the accident must first be reported to h_da. Send the completed accident report form to helpdesk@h-da.de. Please make sure that a period (start and end) of the regularly scheduled university event on the day of the accident is entered in field 21 of the notification. In addition, confirmation from a full-time member of the teaching staff regarding the course of the accident is required (see line 22 of the form).
