Content
How does one design, plan and construct a high-quality space? Where should openings be positioned? What materials should be used for floors and walls? Which fixtures, furniture, luminaires or lighting systems create a functionally coherent and aesthetically pleasing overall effect? These questions represent practical applications of interior architecture at the intersection of architecture and design. In the six-semester Interior Architecture degree programme leading to a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.), students acquire – in addition to subject-specific design and planning expertise as well as design-related practical and methodological skills – a wide range of knowledge, skills and competencies spanning the entire spectrum of the profession: from architectural theory and architectural history through building science, materials science or building construction in structural and finishing works, furniture and component construction or lighting technology, construction execution or construction management, right through to the design, representation and presentation of projects or the communication of work results tailored to specific target groups. You can find more detailed information about the study programme on the website of the Faculty of Architecture (German).
Perspectives
A bachelor’s degree qualifies graduates for employment but also enables them to progress to master’s programmes. Graduates work in roles such as
- Interior design and refurbishment of offices, residential buildings, surgeries, shops and hotels.
- Interior design consultancy in offices for contract furnishing
- Design studios and interior design workshops of furnishing houses
- Trade fair and exhibition construction
- Product development for furniture or lighting fixtures
Building on the Bachelor's degree, the following Master's programme is possible:
Interior Architecture - Master of Engineering
Structure
The qualifications and skills required for these fields of work are taught in the programme’s modules. These may in turn include lectures, seminars, practical sessions, projects, workshops, field trips, experimental work or interdisciplinary activities. A distinctive feature of h_da is the integration of interior design and architecture in the so-called ‘Y-model’, which, at the start of the six-semester Bachelor’s programmes, initially comprises exclusively joint courses designed to teach interdisciplinary fundamentals. Subject-specific specialisation then begins in the second year of study. A detailed presentation of the study contents can be found in the module manual (German).
Access
The degree programme Architecture (B.Eng.) is subject to limited admission (NC). The following school-leaving qualifications, among others, apply as admission requirements:
- General higher education entrance qualification
- Subject-related higher education entrance qualification valid in Hesse
- University of Applied Sciences entrance qualification valid in Hesse
