Certificate of proficiency in the English Language

If you apply to enrol on one of the following degree courses, you will need to supply evidence of a sufficient command of the English language; some degree courses require this in place of certification of proficiency in German, while other degree courses require proof of a proficiency level in both languages.

Even if your chosen degree course is conducted entirely in English, it is nonetheless advisable to achieve a proficiency level in German (B2 level) before you commence your studies, to enable you to properly comprehend the procedures involved.

The following types of confirmation of English language skills are accepted:

Bachelor’s degree courses

Applied Social Sciences

  • B2 certificate, completed in accordance with the European language framework (GeR)
  • 7 years of English lessons at school 
  • Toefl test, or equivalent.

Animation and Game

  • B2 certificate, completed in accordance with the European language framework (GeR), or equivalent.
  • Native language.

Augmented and Virtual Reality Design

  • B2 certificate, completed in accordance with the European language framework (GeR), or equivalent.
  • English graded ‘satisfactory’ or higher in your last report, or
  • Native language.

Information Law

  • TOEFL: at least 57 points.
  • TOEIC: at least 479 points.
  • telc: English B1/ B1 Business certificate, or higher.
  • Cambridge ESOL: BEC certificate, PET or higher.
  • IELTS: at least 5 points.
  • LCCI: EFB grade 2 certificate, or higher.
  • UNIcert: minimum grade 1.

Motion Pictures

  • B2 certificate, completed in accordance with the European language framework (GeR), or equivalent.
  • English graded ‘satisfactory’ or higher in your last report, or
  • Native language.

Master’s degree courses

Animation and Game Direction

  • B2 according to "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR”
  • TOEFL iBT (94-72 Points)
  • IELTS minimum band score 5 - 6,5
  • TELC B2
  • English as language of tuition in the Bachelor program you graduated from

Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (MSE)

  • TOEFL: at least 88 points in total.
  • IELTS: at least 6.5 points (with no individual test  below 6 points).
  • School English is not deemed sufficient.
  • Only native speakers from either the United States or Great Britain are exempted from participating in one of the above tests.

Expanded Media

  • B2 according to "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR”
  • TOEFL iBT (94-72 Points)
  • IELTS minimum band score 5 - 6,5
  • TELC B2
  • The degree from an English-language program may be recognized as proof of English knowledge upon application by the graduate. The decision is made by the examination board.

Master of Business Administration

  • TOEFL: at least 88 points in total.
  • IELTS: at least 6.5 points.
  • Cambridge Certificates: 
    • FCE First Certificate of English (General English, B2)
    • BEC Vantage (82)
    • BEC Higher (Cl)

Mechatronics

  • TOEFL internet -based score 80 or better,
  • IELTS minimum band score 6.0 or better,
  • Cambridge Certificate: FCE First Certificate of English (General English, B2), Grade A BEC Vantage (B2), Grade B or better;
  • Cambridge Certificate BEC Higher (C1), Grade C or better;
  • Proof of modules successfully completed in English abroad amounting to at least 10 credit points (CP).

Industrial Engineering (M.Sc.)

  • B2 certificate, in accordance with the European language framework (GER)
  • B2 certificate from the h_da.
  • TOEFL: at least 80 points in total.
  • IELTS: at least 6 points.
  • TELC certificate grade B2 (for business or technical purposes)
  • Cambridge English: Business Vantage (BEC Vantage) – CEFR Level B2 | Business Higher (BEC Higher) – CEFR Level C1
  • Other certificates may be accepted if determined to be equivalent.
