Application and enrolment for hejmint

Who is the programme intended for?

hejmint was developed for school leavers who are interested in the STEM field but have not yet decided on a subject or are wavering between training and studying. The programme is also aimed at anyone who is still unsure whether a STEM degree is right for them.

What school-leaving qualification do I need and how important is the grade?

To take part in the hejmint orientation semester, you must have a general higher education entrance qualification, a vocational baccalaureate or a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification. hejmint is designed to give you an insight into the wide range of study and career opportunities in the STEM field - it doesn't matter whether you took maths as an advanced course or what average grade you achieved at school.

The final grade only becomes important when it comes to applying for a study place after the orientation semester: you can only study so-called admission-restricted subjects ("NC subjects") with a certain minimum grade.

Important: For participation in hejmint, we do not check whether your university entrance qualification entitles you to study at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. If you decide to study at h_da after the orientation semester, your university entrance qualification will be checked when you apply for a place. You can find out everything else about admission to study at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences here.

Can I take part in hejmint with a (specialised) Abitur obtained abroad?

Yes, for hejmint it is not important in which country you obtained your higher education entrance qualification.

Can I apply if I do not have my (specialised) Abitur certificate before the application deadline?

If you do not have your (specialised) Abitur certificate before the application deadline, you can apply with your last half-year report and submit it later.

I would like to reorientate myself after a (discontinued) course of study or a (discontinued) apprenticeship. Can I also take part?

Yes, you can. hejmint is for anyone who wants to (re)orientate themselves and is interested in STEM.

I am already studying or have started an apprenticeship. Can I also take part?

hejmint is designed as a full-time programme. It will not be possible to complete another degree programme or an apprenticeship at the same time.

What can I expect during the introductory and counselling session?

We would like to give you the opportunity to get to know us and the programme and to ask any questions you may still have. This will give you a better feel for what to expect when you sign up for the hejmint orientation semester. And, of course, we look forward to getting to know you and hearing about your expectations and interests. This way we can better design the programme according to your interests. :)

I have applied and received a confirmation of registration. What should I do if I don't want to take part after all?

Your registration for the orientation semester is binding upon receipt of our confirmation of registration. If you are unable to take part in hejmint for important reasons, please let us know immediately in writing so that we can include interested parties from the waiting list in the programme.

During the orientation semester

Am I entitled to BAföG as a participant?

Unfortunately, the current BAföG regulations do not allow BAföG funding for hejmint, as you are not completing a regular degree programme as a hejmint participant.

Where can I do my work placement?

Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences has a number of partnerships with large companies in the Darmstadt region. We will be happy to advise you on your choice of work placement and support you with your application.

Can I shorten my studies/training with hejmint?

Examinations that you take during the orientation semester can be credited to your later degree programme. This gives you a more relaxed start to your studies.

Do I have to take part in hejmint until the end if I have already decided in favour of an apprenticeship and a course of study?

If you have already decided on a degree programme or apprenticeship during the orientation semester, you do not have to attend the courses and events until the end. Just talk to us when your journey with us is over and we will support you in the transition to your desired training programme/degree course.
